Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a relatively recent practice that has been used in various medical fields, such as cosmetic surgery dentistry, sports medicine, and pain management. PRP was first developed in the 1970s and has been used in cosmetic medicine since the mid-1990s
PRP is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets. Platelets are small, sub-cellular fragments in our blood that help form blood clots and repair the tissue after injury. For example, if you cut your arm, the damaged blood vessel sends a chemical signal that “activates” nearby platelets. These activated platelets then form a plug that stops the bleeding. These kinds of platelets also release growth factors and chemical markers which stimulate the blood clotting cascade and start the tissue healing process. Tissue healing then continues over the next several weeks, growing whatever tissue is needed, such as blood vessels, collagen, cartilage, tendon, muscle, and skin.
Our practice is excited to offer PRP treatment. We harness the power of this naturally regenerative property of platelets and put it to use in improving our patients’ quality of life. What we do is collect platelet-rich plasma from whole blood. The platelets are activated when they and the plasma are separated from whole blood. These platelets then act on the tissue into which they are injected, allowing the stimulation of tissue regeneration and rejuvenation. Orthopedic surgeons have used PRP before to help bones heal faster and stronger.
Below we have a list of our current offerings with PRP:
PRP-enhanced fat grafting
In a vampire facial, PRP is taken through a standard blood draw into one of our specialized blood tubes. We then process this in our office lab. The PRP is then used during your facial treatment through micro-needling. Micro-needling is a process of using a device to drive the PRP into the deeper layers of skin. It is minimally uncomfortable, and patients can elect to use a topical anesthetic cream. However, many patients tolerate the procedure without needing anesthesia. The results include glowing, more youthful skin, smaller pores, and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. We recommend a series of 2 to 6 treatments, depending on your goal.
This process will get you long-lasting results similar to dermal fillers but using your own tissue. Fat grafts have been used to reconstruct soft tissue defects, but if they are infused with PRP, the platelets contribute to the initiation and progression of healing after the procedure. Its one drawback is the unpredictability of the final results, as less than 100% of the transferred fat will remain. PRP will also improve the “take” rate of the transferred fat.
Men and women can both experience hair loss. There is now an alternative treatment to hair transplants with PRP. In this kind of therapy, PRP is collected and both injected under the scalp and into the skin through micro-needling. Most patients will require several treatments to achieve the desired effect. Results with this PRP treatment have been dramatic, and many patients have given positive reviews of their results.
The Priapus Shot, or P-Shot, is a treatment for male erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease (where scar tissue forms under the skin of the penis and causes curved painful erections). During this treatment, we prepare the PRP via blood-draw and inject it into the penis. The activated platelets stimulate the growth of blood vessels, nerves, and supporting tissue to improve symptoms. Most men will notice improvement after one treatment, but a series of 2 to 4 more shots is recommended for best results.
The O-Shot is a PRP-based treatment for women. PRP is injected into the anterior vaginal wall in the region of the G-Spot, an area of high concentration of nervous tissue that is believed to play a role in human female sexual response and orgasm. The PRP will rejuvenate and enhance the nervous tissue, its blood supply, and supporting tissue in the area, leading to enhanced sexual pleasure for women.
